Prythian is a land of seven courts, each ruled by a High Lord — divided between the Solar Courts (Day, Dawn, and Night) and the Seasonal Courts (Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter). Beyond Prythian, the mortal lands stretch to the south, and the island kingdom of Hybern once lay across the sea.

A Court of Silver Flames is set months after the war with Hybern. The wall between the mortal and faerie realms is gone, shattered by the Cauldron. The King of Hybern is dead, and the Cauldron has been reforged and hidden. All seven High Lords survived, but the post-war alliance is fragile.

Recap Summary

Nesta has spent the months since the war drinking, taking strangers home, and burning through the money Feyre provides her. The Inner Circle stages an intervention, and Feyre and Rhysand give her a choice: train with Cassian at the House of Wind and work in the library to earn her keep, or be cut off entirely and sent to the human lands. Nesta goes to the House of Wind.

The House sits atop a flat mountain, accessible only by flight or by climbing ten thousand steps. Nesta cannot fly or winnow, so she is effectively trapped. Cassian trains her every morning in the practice rings. The House itself begins responding to Nesta, leaving her food and books and running her baths, as if it has a will of its own.

While shelving books in the library, Nesta meets Gwyn, a priestess who has lived below the House for nearly two years after surviving a traumatic attack. She also connects with Emerie, an Illyrian shopkeeper in Windhaven whose family punishes her for refusing to conform. The three become friends and begin training together. Gwyn discovers the history of the Valkyries — a legendary clan of female warriors who were superior fighters to the Illyrians — and the three adopt the name and techniques.

Azriel’s spies report that Briallyn, the mortal queen aged by the Cauldron, has allied with Koschei, an ancient death-lord trapped at a remote lake. Koschei has pointed Briallyn toward the Dread Trove — three objects Made by the Cauldron in ancient times: the Mask, which raises the dead; the Harp, which opens any door, even between worlds; and the Crown, which controls minds. Only someone Made by the Cauldron can locate the Trove.

Nesta locates the Mask in the Bog of Oorid, a place of ancient darkness where warriors were once laid to rest. She is dragged underwater by a kelpie, finds the Mask on the bog floor, dons it, and summons the dead of Oorid to destroy the creature. She retrieves the Harp from beneath the Prison, encountering Lanthys, an ancient entity who reveals that the Harp’s final string can stop Time itself.

Eris, acting as a covert ally, feeds intelligence about Briallyn and Beron’s movements. Briallyn has been sending Autumn Court soldiers to interfere and tracked Nesta through the connection between the Crown and the other Trove items.

At a gathering in the Hewn City, Feyre reveals her pregnancy. Unknown to her, the baby has Illyrian wings and Feyre’s body cannot deliver it. Both she and Rhysand, bound by their life-bargain, would die. Rhysand ordered the Inner Circle to keep the truth from Feyre. When Nesta discovers this, she tells Feyre, fracturing the court.

Intending to exhaust Nesta so she cannot fight back, Briallyn orchestrates the kidnapping of Nesta, Gwyn, and Emerie into the Blood Rite — an ancient Illyrian trial held on the mountain of Ramiel with no magic, no weapons, and no outside help. The three women survive together, forging weapons, fighting off warriors, and reaching the summit of Ramiel. They become the first females ever named Carythian.

At the summit, Cassian arrives under the Crown’s control. Briallyn was waiting for him to come close enough to ensnare. She orders him to kill Nesta, but Cassian fights the Crown’s hold and turns the knife on himself instead, exploiting a loophole in Briallyn’s command. As the blade drives toward his chest, Nesta erupts with the full force of her Cauldron-born power and destroys Briallyn. Nesta accepts the mating bond with Cassian.

Weeks later, Feyre goes into labour. The baby is wedged in the birth canal and will not descend. Nesta dons all three items of the Dread Trove at once. She plucks the Harp’s final string to stop Time, uses the Mask to hold death at bay, and bargains with the Cauldron: she will return the power she stole from it if it shows her how to save her sister, Rhysand, and the baby. The Cauldron accepts. Nesta pours her power into Feyre, healing her body and bringing the baby to full term. The Mask and Crown fall from her. Most of her power is gone, traded back to the Cauldron, though a silver flame remains.

Feyre and Rhysand’s son, Nyx, is born healthy with Illyrian wings. The Dread Trove is returned to hiding. Nesta and Cassian are given the House of Wind as their home, and a mating ceremony is planned. Gwyn and Emerie continue training with the priestesses as Valkyries.
