A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first book in a high fantasy series of the same name. It introduces a world where mortals and faeries remain sharply divided. The story opens in the mortal lands, where humans live in the shadow of an ancient wall that separates their world from the faerie realm. A Treaty established centuries ago keeps the two sides apart. Faeries are feared, though some humans — known as the Children of the Blessed — worship them and cross the wall willingly. Feyre Archeron is a young huntress keeping her impoverished father and two older sisters alive.
The faerie realm and its courts are largely unknown to humans. Their internal structures are concealed behind myth and superstition. The Spring Court, marked by its eternal bloom, peaceful estates, and ancient enchantments, stands as the first glimpse into Prythian’s landscapes and the older magics that define them.

Recap Summary
Feyre Archeron lives in poverty with her father and two sisters, Nesta and Elain, near the wall separating the mortal lands from Prythian. During a winter hunt, she kills a large wolf she suspects is a faerie. She skins it and sells the pelt.
Days later, Tamlin — a faerie in beast form — arrives at the Archeron cottage demanding retribution under the Treaty between humans and fae. Feyre is taken across the wall into Prythian.
At Tamlin’s manor in the Spring Court, Feyre learns she must remain indefinitely but will not be harmed. She meets Lucien, Tamlin’s emissary and youngest son of the High Lord of the Autumn Court. Feyre may move freely within the estate but cannot cross its borders. While exploring, she encounters hostile creatures, including the Bogge and Naga. Tamlin protects her but refuses to explain the danger threatening the region.
Feyre captures a Suriel and questions it. She learns Tamlin is High Lord of the Spring Court. The Suriel names Amarantha as the source of Prythian’s suffering and tells Feyre to stay with Tamlin. As Feyre adjusts to life in the Spring Court, her relationship with Tamlin deepens into romance.
Against warnings, Feyre attends the Calanmai celebration. Away from the main festivities, three faeries attempt to assault her. A stranger intervenes and drives them off. The stranger is Rhysand, High Lord of the Night Court. He later visits the Spring Court and immediately identifies Feyre, threatening to report her to Amarantha, who rules Prythian from Under the Mountain.
Tamlin confesses his love and decides Feyre is no longer safe in Prythian. He sends her back to the mortal lands under magical sedation. She awakens to find her family living in wealth. Nesta reveals she was unaffected by the glamour and tried to follow Feyre into Prythian, but couldn’t cross the wall.
Feyre learns that Clare Beddor — a mortal girl whose name she once used as a false identity — was abducted and killed. She makes her way back to the Spring Court manor only to find it abandoned and damaged. Alis explains that the wolf Feyre killed was Andras, a Spring Court sentinel sent across the wall by Tamlin, and that Amarantha cursed Tamlin and his court after he rejected her. To break the curse, Tamlin had forty-nine years to find a human who hated the fae, win her love, and marry her.
Travelling to Under the Mountain, Feyre is captured by the Attor. She declares she has come for Tamlin, and Amarantha offers a bargain: solve a riddle or complete three trials to win Tamlin’s freedom.
In the first trial, Feyre faces a Middengard Wyrm in an arena. She kills it using improvised tactics but suffers severe injuries. Court members bet on her death — only Rhysand wagers she will survive. After the trial, Rhysand visits Feyre’s cell and offers to heal her injuries in exchange for one week per month with him in the Night Court. Feyre accepts, and he heals her arm, marking it with a tattoo sealing the bargain.
Between trials, Feyre is imprisoned and given impossible tasks until Rhysand intervenes. Each evening until the next trial, she is drugged with faerie wine and displayed beside Rhysand at court, forced to dance until exhausted. During the day, she sleeps or tries unsuccessfully to solve Amarantha’s riddle.
In the throne room, Amarantha orders Rhysand to interrogate a Summer Court faerie attempting to escape. Rhysand kills him swiftly rather than destroying his mind. In the second trial, Feyre and Lucien are trapped in a chamber requiring written instructions, which Feyre cannot read. The tattoo on her arm helps by burning when she makes wrong choices, allowing her to complete the task.
On the eve of the final trial, Tamlin approaches Feyre secretly and leads her to a side passage. Rhysand interrupts and warns them of the danger. Amarantha arrives, and Rhysand fabricates evidence suggesting Feyre behaved inappropriately with him. That night, Rhysand visits Feyre’s cell and explains his exhaustion under Amarantha’s control, his strategic motivations, and his plan to provoke Tamlin into a confrontation Amarantha cannot survive. He also reveals that Tamlin hates him because Rhysand’s father killed Tamlin’s family.
For the final trial, Amarantha orders Feyre to kill three hooded faeries with ash daggers. Feyre kills the first two after their hoods are removed. When the final hood lifts, she discovers the third is Tamlin. Feyre recalls that Tamlin’s heart was turned to stone under the curse, meaning the ash dagger could not kill him. She declares her love and stabs him, fulfilling the curse’s final condition.
Amarantha refuses to honour the bargain and tortures Feyre instead. Rhysand attacks Amarantha repeatedly but is struck down each time. Figuring out the riddle mid-torture, Feyre declares the answer is “love” as Amarantha snaps her spine, killing her.
In death, Feyre’s consciousness persists. She observes events through Rhysand’s perspective while her body lies dead. Tamlin transforms into his beast form, breaks free, and kills Amarantha with blade and claws. The High Lords approach Feyre’s body, and each contributes power, resurrecting her and transforming her into High Fae.
Feyre awakens alive and transformed. She and Tamlin leave Under the Mountain. Rhysand briefly summons Feyre, confirms their bargain remains in effect, reacts to something he perceives about her, and vanishes. Feyre and Tamlin return to the Spring Court manor. The Spring Court is restored, but the bargain with the Night Court remains unresolved and Hybern’s political threat looms. Amarantha’s body has been hauled off to be burned, though Jurian’s finger bone and eye are somehow missing.
