Queen of Shadows is the fourth book in the Throne of Glass series and is set primarily in Rifthold, the capital of the Adarlanian Empire. At the start of the novel, Adarlan remains under the rule of the King of Adarlan, who has banned magic across the continent. The suppression of magic is enforced through Wyrdstone clock towers positioned throughout major cities, including Rifthold. These towers prevent the use of magical abilities and conceal the presence of demonic forces operating within the empire.

Rifthold is heavily militarised, with black-uniformed guards patrolling the streets and public executions used as instruments of control. A rebel network operates covertly within the city, led in part by former Captain of the Guard, Chaol Westfall.

Beyond Rifthold, Morath has emerged as a fortress under Duke Perrington’s control. Morath serves as a base for Valg experimentation and military expansion, including the use of Wyrdstone, demon possession, and Ironteeth witches. The Ironteeth witch clans, led by Wing Leader Manon Blackbeak, are stationed there as aerial forces in service of Adarlan.

Aelin Galathynius, the lost Queen of Terrasen, returns to Rifthold at the beginning of the novel. She arrives to find her cousin Aedion Ashryver imprisoned and Prince Dorian Havilliard enslaved by a Wyrdstone collar.

Recap Summary

In Rifthold, Prince Dorian Havilliard is imprisoned under a Wyrdstone collar and controlled by a Valg prince. Aelin Galathynius returns to the city under the identity of Celaena Sardothien and learns that Aedion Ashryver has been captured and scheduled for public execution. She confronts Arobynn Hamel, who offers assistance in rescuing Aedion in exchange for her capturing a Valg demon, revealing his continued interest in Valg power.

Aelin reconnects with Nesryn Faliq and reunites with Chaol Westfall, who has left the royal guard and joined a covert rebel network operating within the city. During their meeting, Aelin returns Chaol’s ring, and he gives her the Eye of Elena. Their interaction is strained, and Chaol deliberately withholds information about the magic-suppressing clock towers, uncertain of Aelin’s intentions and the consequences of restoring magic.

Arobynn sends Aelin her old assassin equipment and delivers Lysandra to her as a calculated gesture of goodwill, expecting Lysandra to be killed. Instead, Lysandra presents evidence confirming Arobynn’s role in Sam Cortland’s murder and establishes an alliance with Aelin.

In Morath, Duke Perrington orders Manon Blackbeak to oversee Valg breeding experiments using Ironteeth witches. Elide Lochan, a Terrasen noble, is imprisoned there by her uncle, Vernon Lochan, and assigned as a servant to Manon, who recognises Elide’s Blackbeak lineage and places her under indirect protection. Kaltain Rompier removes a shard of Wyrdstone embedded in her arm and entrusts it to Elide, instructing her to deliver it only to Celaena Sardothien. She detonates shadowfire, destroying much of the complex and sacrificing herself to prevent further atrocities and allowing Elide to escape with assistance from Manon.

In Rifthold, Aelin infiltrates the glass castle during Aedion’s execution, disguised as a dancer. She uses explosives to create a diversion, frees Aedion, and arms him with the Sword of Orynth. They are intercepted by the possessed Dorian. Aelin hesitates to strike him, trying to sense any resistance beneath the possession, and Nesryn intervenes to protect Dorian as Aelin and Aedion escape.

Rowan Whitethorn arrives in Rifthold after tracking Aelin from Wendlyn and reveals that Lorcan Salvaterre is also in the city searching for the Wyrdkeys. After meeting Aedion, Rowan identifies Gavriel as his father. Knowing Aelin was being followed, she lures Lorcan into the sewers, forcing him to use his combat skills to eliminate Wyrdhounds while concealing her broader objectives. At an official meeting, Lorcan offers a ring that grants immunity to Valg control in return for the Amulet of Orynth, which he believes contains a Wyrdkey and intends to deliver to Maeve.

Aelin, Rowan, and Aedion capture a Valg demon and deliver it to Arobynn. Arobynn attempts to enslave Aelin using a Wyrdstone ring, but she secretly replaced it with a mundane replica beforehand. Later that night, Lysandra reveals herself as a shapeshifter whose magic had been suppressed by the ban and assassinates Arobynn. Aelin presents a forged will, claims his estate and the Amulet of Orynth, and assumes control of the Assassin’s Guild.

Acting on intelligence, Aelin and her allies infiltrate Oakwald Forest to observe a covert meeting between the King of Adarlan and the Ironteeth witches. While Dorian speaks privately with Manon Blackbeak, Aelin and Chaol engineer a diversion that allows them to intercept a guarded wagon and rescue Lysandra. During the operation, Aelin confronts Manon in combat. Aelin saves Manon’s life, incurring a formal life debt under witch law, after which Manon confirms that Dorian remains conscious beneath the Valg possession.

Aelin’s court uncovers a hidden cache of hellfire beneath Rifthold. She infiltrates the glass castle posing as Chaol’s captor while Rowan, Aedion, and Lorcan plant hellfire in the catacombs. In the throne room, Dorian attacks Aelin and Chaol is critically injured. Aelin draws Dorian onto a skybridge and slips Athril’s ring onto his finger, weakening the Valg prince. The hellfire detonates, destroying the clock tower and restoring magic across the continent.

Dorian removes the Wyrdstone collar and joins Aelin in confronting the King of Adarlan. Before his death, the king reveals that he was possessed by Erawan, that Duke Perrington is Erawan’s primary host, and that the clock towers were built to shield Dorian from the Valg. Dorian delivers the killing blow. As the glass castle collapses, Aelin uses her fire to protect the city from falling debris.

Dorian is acknowledged as King of Adarlan and abolishes slavery. Chaol is paralysed from the waist down and appointed Hand of the King, later being named Terrasen’s ambassador to the Southern Continent to seek healing at the Torre Cesme. Nesryn Faliq is appointed Captain of the Guard. Aelin, Rowan, Aedion, Lysandra, and Evangeline depart Rifthold and travel north, crossing into Terrasen and formally beginning Aelin’s reign. Lorcan departs Rifthold unaware of the deception, only later discovering that the amulet is false.
