Heir of Fire is the third book in the Throne of Glass series. The world expands beyond Erilea into Adarlan and across the sea to Wendlyn, a coastal kingdom with close ties to the Fae. While the glass castle of Rifthold remains central, much of the story unfolds in Wendlyn — home to Queen Maeve and the ancient magic Celaena must reclaim. The continent’s history deepens as ancient forces stir, including the Valg, demonic creatures from another world. Though magic remains banished in Adarlan, its origins, limits, and legacy are increasingly revealed.
The novel follows multiple perspectives: Celaena’s journey in Wendlyn to train with the Fae; the escalating stakes in Rifthold as Chaol and Dorian navigate resistance and magical suppression; and the introduction of Manon Blackbeak and the Ironteeth witches, now allied with the king.

Recap Summary
Celaena Sardothien arrives in Wendlyn under orders from the King of Adarlan to assassinate the royal family. After observing her targets, she decides against it. Still grieving Nehemia Ytger’s death, she abandons the mission and isolates herself in the city — drinking, fighting, and avoiding politics — instead of seeking Queen Maeve for information about the Wyrdkeys.
Rowan Whitethorn, a Fae warrior, eventually finds her and informs her she has been summoned. He escorts her to Doranelle, where Queen Maeve addresses her by her true identity: Aelin Galathynius. Maeve offers knowledge of the Wyrdkeys only if Celaena proves herself worthy. She assigns Rowan to train Celaena in magic and combat before she may enter Doranelle.
While Celaena begins training at Mistward under Rowan’s supervision, events unfold in Adarlan. Prince Dorian Havilliard meets Sorscha, a healer, and the two grow closer as Dorian’s suppressed magic begins manifesting uncontrollably. Sorscha conceals these incidents and helps him suppress his power.
Meanwhile, all Ironteeth witch clans are summoned to the Ferian Gap. They learn Baba Yellowlegs has been killed, and Mother Blackbeak announces an alliance with the King of Adarlan. The witches are promised the Western Wastes in exchange for serving as aerial cavalry on wyverns bred by the king. Preparations begin for War Games to determine command of the Ironteeth forces.
At Mistward, Rowan subjects Celaena to harsh training. He brings her to a field of burial mounds inhabited by barrow-wights and orders her to cross it alone. During the crossing, Celaena encounters an entity that produces supernatural darkness and induces hallucinations from her past. Rowan retrieves her, declares she failed by losing control of her magic, and orders her to resume training.
Back in Rifthold, Chaol Westfall grows suspicious of Aedion Ashryver’s black ring and secretly follows him. Chaol is captured and interrogated by Aedion, Ren Allsbrook, and Murtaugh. Aedion reveals he replaced the ring with a replica. In turn, Chaol discloses that Celaena Sardothien is Aelin Galathynius — and that she is alive.
Frustrated by her lack of progress and Rowan’s methods, Celaena announces she is abandoning training and leaves Mistward. Rowan tracks her down, and during their confrontation they are attacked by skinwalkers. Working together, they narrowly evade the creatures and return to Mistward, where Celaena resumes training.
Chaol later meets Aedion in a hidden apartment once owned by Celaena, which they begin using as a research base. They exchange information about the disappearance of magic and suspicious activity across Adarlan.
During a later training exercise, Rowan brings Celaena to a cave beneath Bald Mountain and orders her to cross a frozen underground lake in her Fae form to rescue Luca. An ancient creature beneath the ice attacks during their escape. Rowan throws Celaena a discarded sword with a ruby and gold ring set into its hilt. After returning to Mistward, Celaena confronts Rowan for endangering others. Rowan reveals the history of his mate Lyria’s death and his blood oath to Maeve. A story told by Emrys reveals the true history behind the sword they found.
Through continued reconnaissance, Chaol determines that the towers at Noll, Amaroth, and Rifthold form a deliberate triangular magical structure. He brings Dorian fully into his discoveries. Together, they identify Morath and the Ferian Gap as key sites of activity and recognise the strategic importance of the clock tower in Rifthold.
At the Ferian Gap, Manon Blackbeak grows increasingly concerned about Abraxos’s damaged wings. She travels into the Ruhnn Mountains, steals spidersilk from the Stygian spiders, and has it grafted onto Abraxos’s wings to strengthen them.
Meanwhile, Rowan and Celaena investigate murders in villages surrounding Mistward. They discover drained demi-Fae bodies and trace the killings to a hidden coastal encampment run by Adarlan forces, where victims were used in experiments. They conclude the force intends to march inland to capture or eliminate Mistward’s demi-Fae population. Mistward begins emergency preparations to evacuate non-combatants and defend the fortress.
When the attack comes, Rowan’s cadre arrives to assist. During the battle, Celaena maintains the ward-barrier while engaging three entities directly. She channels fire into her sword, which the creatures recognise as Goldryn — revealing its connection to Brannon Galathynius and Athril. Through the confrontation, Celaena realises the entities are Valg princes inhabiting mortal bodies and learns their origins.
She is eventually overpowered and dragged beyond the ward-stones, where the Valg reveal they feed on pain and intend to keep her alive as a source of suffering. As the torment intensifies, Celaena accepts her identity as Queen of Terrasen and rejects their control. She erupts in fire, destroys two Valg princes, and — joined by Rowan through their carranam bond — annihilates Narrok and the remaining prince.
In Doranelle, Celaena openly challenges Queen Maeve and reveals her reconstruction of the past involving Brannon Galathynius, Athril, and the Wyrdkeys. She declares that Maeve never helped Brannon retrieve the keys — instead, she tried to steal them. When Brannon and Athril opposed her, Maeve killed Athril herself, not the Valg as history claimed. Brannon then seized the Wyrdkeys from Maeve and destroyed the Sun Goddess’s temple to erase all traces of his path, leaving Athril’s sword hidden in the cave beneath Bald Mountain as a final tribute. Celaena asserts that Brannon concealed a Wyrdkey within his household heirloom to protect his bloodline from Maeve, and that Maeve abandoned her lands and fortified Doranelle to shield herself from Brannon’s heirs. She concludes that Maeve summoned her not to test her worth, but to assess the threat posed by the union of Brannon’s power with Mab’s bloodline. Celaena unleashes her fire across Doranelle and offers Athril’s ring in exchange for Rowan’s freedom. Maeve releases Rowan from his blood oath, and he immediately swears a blood oath to Celaena.
During the Ironteeth War Games, Iskra Yellowlegs attacks Petrah Blueblood and her wyvern Keelie. Manon and Abraxos intervene, allowing Petrah to be rescued at the cost of Keelie’s life. The Blackbeaks win the War Games, and Manon is declared Wing Leader. During a private Ironteeth ceremony, Manon is presented with a captured Crochan witch and ordered to execute her to claim a new cloak, which she does.
In Rifthold, news of Aelin Galathynius’s survival spreads. Chaol, Aedion, Dorian, and Sorscha are summoned before the King of Adarlan, who reveals his knowledge of rebel activity within the castle. When Sorscha is threatened, Aedion falsely confesses to being the sole traitor. The king exposes Sorscha as a rebel informant and orders her execution despite Dorian’s pleas. Sorscha is beheaded in the council chamber. When the king orders Chaol’s execution, Dorian reveals his magic.
Chaol escapes the castle with Fleetfoot, retrieves the sword Damaris and magical texts, and reunites with Ren. Aedion is imprisoned in the dungeons. Dorian is subdued by the king and fitted with a Wyrdstone collar.
Following the War Games, Manon is ordered by the Blackbeak Matron to lead half the Ironteeth host to Morath to serve the Duke of Morath and the King of Adarlan. The remaining covens are placed under Iskra Yellowlegs’ command.
As the story concludes, Aelin boards a ship bound for Rifthold under the identity of Celaena Sardothien, committed to retrieving the Wyrdkeys, freeing magic, and confronting the King of Adarlan. Rowan remains in Wendlyn to aid Mistward.
