Erilea is a vast, high-fantasy continent rich in history, magic, and political tension. The narrative spans multiple kingdoms, each with unique cultures, power structures, and relationships to magic.
I: Key Kingdoms and Territories
Terrasen
Northern, forested kingdom and ancestral home of the Galathynius family. Known for strong ties to ancient magic. Capital: Orynth.
Adarlan
Powerful central empire ruled by the King of Adarlan. Conquered several neighbouring lands including Terrasen and Eyllwe, and outlawed magic through brutal suppression. Capital: Rifthold.
Wendlyn
Western kingdom across the sea, home to Fae and demi-Fae. Ruled by Aelin’s uncle. Known for sacred forests and ancient Fae ties. Capital: Varese.
Eyllwe
A southern nation with a rich spiritual culture and home of Princess Nehemia. Known for resistance movements and elemental magic ties.
Doranelle
Realm of the Fae, ruled by Queen Maeve. High Fae culture; militarised and secretive. Located within Wendlyn’s broader region.
The Southern Continent
Independent from Adarlan’s conquest. Governed by the Khaganate — politically stable, technologically advanced, and non-magical. Capital: Antica.
II: Peoples and Races
Humans
Spread across all nations, dominant in Adarlan, Terrasen, and the Southern Continent.
Fae
Long-lived magical beings who can shift between forms. Found mostly in Wendlyn and Doranelle, divided between full-blooded Fae and demi-Fae.
Witches
Divided into two historic clans: the Ironteeth and the Crochans, each with unique forms of magic, culture, and social structure.
Ironteeth: A brutal, matriarchal warrior society split into three covens — Blackbeak, Yellowlegs, and Blueblood. Known for iron fangs and claws, bred for combat, and riders of wyverns in aerial battle.
Crochans: Once rulers of all witch-kind before being overthrown by the Ironteeth in a civil war. They wear red cloaks and live in secrecy, mainly in the western Wastes. Known for healing magic, ancestral wisdom, and elemental connection. They reject the Ironteeth’s violence-focused culture.
Valg
Ancient demonic beings from another world who entered Erilea through Wyrdgates. Manipulative and parasitic, capable of possessing humans and creatures.
III: Magic Systems
Magic
Diverse and elementally tied — fire, water, wind, and more. Suppressed by Adarlan’s king using Wyrdstone, and restored after his death.
Wyrdkeys and Wyrdgates
Three ancient keys capable of opening portals to other worlds. Wyrdgates are the passageways; Wyrdkeys are the tools to control them. Central to the power struggle across the series, originating from pre-human times.

History, Culture, and Politics
Erilea’s current political and magical landscape is the result of centuries of war, imperialism, betrayal, and the long decay of ancient power structures.
The Decline of Magic and Ancient Order
Magic in Erilea was once widespread and central to governance, religion, and daily life. Fae, witches, and gifted humans lived openly, particularly in regions like Terrasen and Wendlyn. The Valg kings Erawan and his brothers arrived in Erilea seeking domination, and the King of Adarlan later completed the suppression of magic by cutting off access entirely.
Imperialism and the Rise of Adarlan
Adarlan’s expansion under King Havilliard reshaped Erilea. It relied on magic suppression, forced assimilation, and brutal occupation. By criminalising magic and controlling knowledge, the king concentrated all cultural and economic power in Rifthold. Resistance movements formed in reaction to this oppression.
Witch Wars and Cultural Schism
The witches’ internal war mirrors the broader collapse of magical order. The Crochans once ruled all witches, favouring unity, healing magic, and balance with nature. Their rule ended in a civil war engineered by Ironteeth matriarchs who valued strength and militarism.
Fae and Southern Isolationism
The demi-Fae in Wendlyn kept their distance from Adarlan’s empire. The Khaganate on the Southern Continent maintained its own independence, governed by a merit-based system rather than bloodline.
The Wyrdkeys and Existential Stakes
The underlying cause of most conflict is the existence of the Wyrdkeys — three artefacts capable of manipulating reality and opening the Wyrdgate, a portal between worlds. Control of the Wyrdkeys means access to otherworldly power, including the ability to summon or repel Valg forces. Those who possess them gain immense power at the cost of their humanity.
